Sentara Martha Jefferson Orthopedics and Spine

Back and Neck

Sentara Martha Jefferson’s new Advanced Back and Neck Care service offers alternative therapies that may allow patients to avoid surgery. Our specialists provide care for pain associated with conditions such as osteoarthritis, herniated discs and degenerative disc conditions, spinal deformities and many more.

There are a number of pain management techniques can offer tremendous relief for back and neck problems that cause chronic pain. Among the sophisticated services available at Sentara Martha Jefferson are:

  • Soft tissue injections to reduce inflammation of nerves, joints and muscles
  • Prolotherapy, a type of injection that stimulates the body’s natural healing capabilities, often effective for chronic tendinitis or chronic inflammation
  • Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS), transmits electrical impulses through acupuncture-like needles into targeted areas on the body
  • Radiofrequency ablation, a technique that uses radio waves to produce electrical currents that heat up targeted nerve areas to reduce painful stimuli
  • Spinal cord stimulation, a technique that involved implanting a device into the spine that sends out mild electrical currents to reduce certain types of pain.

Regardless of what techniques are used for individual patients, physical therapy plays a significant role in most cases in helping patients recover. Physical therapists are available on-site and work closely with the doctors to help patients improve flexibility and range of motion.
